Helpful Tips for Creating an Effective Poster
Plan Ahead
Start by setting a deadline and defining milestones. Allow time for revisions and corrections. Keep the design simple, attractive, and large.
Follow the Guidelines
Just as when preparing a scientific paper, you should follow the guidelines set by the conference. It is your responsibility to know the physical requirements for the poster, including acceptable size and format.
Graphics
Graphics and images tell the whole story, so use text sparingly. All visual illustrations should connect all points and conclusions. Typically, 4 to 6 figures are included. Keep them simple, understandable, and self-explanatory. Use brief captions (maximum 10 to 25 words).
Organization
Arrange posters to present a vertical flow of information (from top to bottom in columns) so that potential readers can see the entire poster at a glance from left to right. Keep the sequence of information logical and well-organized. If necessary, use numbers, letters, and arrows to guide the reader.
Headings and Titles
Use headings to guide the reader through your poster, identify the main points, and summarize your work in large print. The reader should be able to understand the main points of the headings without assistance. Headings should have a font size of at least 36 points, and the main heading should have a font size at least 5 cm high.
Text
The text should be legible (font size of at least 24 points). We recommend using bullet points and active voice. Limit the different text elements to 50 words or less. If you can read all the characters of the text while standing in front of the poster, then the font size is appropriate. Readers are likely to view your poster from a distance of 1 meter.
Fonts
There are two font styles: sans-serif and serif. For bullet points, use sans-serif fonts such as Arial, Helvetica, and Avant Garde. Because they are easier to read, use serif fonts such as Times New Roman, Roman, and Palatino for body text or blocks.
Poster Size
We recommend posters in A0 size (90 cm x 120 cm or similar). Plan your poster to make the most of the space without exceeding it.
Awards & Prizes
The company ReadytoPub will award two prizes consisting of €500 and €300 vouchers, respectively, for the best oral and poster presentations delivered by students. These credits can be used toward any of the services offered by the company, as detailed in the attached brochure.
The organization will also award three prizes to the best posters.
The organizers will provide participants with the necessary materials to hang their posters on the panels.
